I feel very privileged to have met some remarkable people over the ten years I’ve worked for CAFOD. One who left a deep impression was Chanda Fikansa (pictured above), a Zambian who runs a home-based care programme for people living with HIV/AIDS.
His words still have the power to bring a lump to my throat. They speak volumes to me about the spirit of livesimply, and about the hope that we can bring to others. He was asked what he would take home with him from his visit to CAFOD:
“What would I take home to those people who are dying? What would I take home to those orphans who don't have any hope? … What would I take home to those people who don't have anything to eat today and don't know if they will have anything to eat tomorrow? …
I am going to take them the message of solidarity… I am going to tell them that in this dark hour which we are experiencing in Zambia… there are people there who are sacrificing for you, who are standing for you, being advocates for you… there are people out there who want to change the way we are living and make a difference for you.”
Taking the 99% Challenge is my way of doing what Chanda was talking about – making financial sacrifices; walking alongside those who suffer; and doing what I can to make a difference.
The 99% Challenge is one way CAFOD is asking people to respond to the hard questions posed by livesimply: how do my everyday actions affect people living in developing countries? Do I have more than I need? Could I share with people who have less?
It asks us to consider if we could live on 99% of our income and to think about the difference the other 1% could make to someone living in extreme poverty. A regular gift to CAFOD of any amount – whether it equates to 1% or not – really does have the power to transform lives.
