More details
I’ve been working in CAFOD’s campaign team for just over 6 months and I’ve been involved in trade justice and debt campaigning for a few years now. But sometimes I struggle to get my friends and family to campaign with me - I often feel a bit isolated.
So I thought starting a livesimply promise would be a great opportunity to be part of a new, online community. I also like the livesimply challenge because it fits in so well with my work: the idea is to live simply, sustainably and in solidarity with those in poverty.
The other day I met Franck Bura from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He came to the UK to tell people about how gold mining affects his community.
He told me that in his country, 1,200 people die every day from conflict-related disease, hunger and violence. That conflict is fuelled by the struggle for gold and other minerals. But he also said that by standing in solidarity we could help change this:
“We can win this battle with perseverance – it will be a long process, but with efforts from both North and South we can do it. Making a chain of solidarity can make change in the DRC.”
Franck’s confidence that we can make a difference has inspired me to make my promise, and I’ll be taking action this year on CAFOD’s Unearth Justice and trade campaigns.
So please take these steps:
1. Sign up to my promise.
2. Click the link in the promise to take your first campaign action.
3. Get other people involved to show our solidarity with people like Franck.

Some of the people who signed this promise also signed these promises...
I fly around the world. That flight is warming up the planet by a tiny tiny tiny little bit. Now multiply that by millions - it creates a change in climate that has a terrible impact on all of us, but especially people who are poor.
I buy cheap clothes. As do many people in Europe. More of us - more of the factories that treat workers in developing countries in a way that we would never allow here.
My actions - actions of one small individual - can bring about change. Good and bad.
So I am going to use this power to try to change the world.
Campaign, recycle, cycle.....More of us do it.... You see where I am going with this?
I'll start here by signing up to this promise.
What about you?
Thanks for signing up to my promise to take 3 campaigns actions in a year.
It has been great to receive messages from some of you over the past few weeks and hearing how you're getting involved, keep sending your messages to me.
Campaign action 1:
There are only 9 days to go to sign the online pledge for clean gold www.cafod.org.uk/goldpledge. If you haven't done so already please get your friends and family to join the Livesimply promise and show their support by the 1st April so we can hand in 50,000 signatures in April.
Campaign action 2:
For your second campaign action of 2007 you can email Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, to tell her to stop unfair trade deals: www.cafod.org.uk/mailmerkel.
Keep an eye out for the third action of the year very shortly.
Best wishes,
Helen
I hope you are all well and coping with the rain! I just thought I would write to let you know that there is currently a campaigns action to ask Argos and Goldsmiths to sign up to the Golden Rules. Why not email the jewellers as part of your campaigns promise to live simply? You just need to sign your name in the online email: www.cafod.org.uk/latestaction.
Find out more about the Unearth Justice campaign: www.cafod.org.uk/unearthjustice.
Do let me know if you have any questions - hcross@cafod.org.uk.
I am one of the 37 who signed up for this promise. Sorry you did not get as many as you wanted, but I will keep going and do my bit for Cafod's campaigns,
David
Thank you for signing up to my promise to take 3 campaign actions in a year. It has been great to hear about your campaigning in 2007 and I hope you manage to continue it this year!
I took action for CAFOD’s Unearth Justice and Make Aid Work campaigns in 2007 and am looking forward to continuing campaigning this year. If you’ve also taken actions for these campaigns then why not find out more on CAFOD’s website - www.cafod.org.uk/campaigning - where you can also sign up to receive campaign updates.
I found out today that someone else has started a promise to take 3 campaign actions in 2008 so I signed up. Perhaps you’d like to sign it too: http://promise.livesimply.org.uk/campaigns.
Best wishes,
Helen
