Hello, I'm Paul Pope and I'm the HIV and AIDS Advocacy Coordinator at Progressio. Every day people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) experience terrible stigma and discrimination.
It seems that being a sexually transmitted disease means that it brings out the worst taboos and sensitivities towards sex, disease and marginalisation. As a result PLWHA are excluded from mainstream society.
Stigma, discrimination and ignorance about HIV leads to the perpetuation of myths and stereotypes. These barriers need to be broken down to help prevent further infection and make the lives of those living with HIV easier and better.
We need to do all we can both in the UK and overseas to spread awareness about the true facts of HIV and AIDS and reach out to care, help, support and include PLWHA. People should not have to live with this stigma and discrimination anywhere in the world.
Perhaps if we all asked ourselves the question 'Who would you tell if you were HIV positive?' then we might be more sensitive to people living with the illness and be able to have freer and franker conversations about sex and STDs and help prevent more infections.
Please join me in committing to spread awareness about HIV and AIDS.
